The Best Summers of My Life

This piece was assembled in 2003 and features the track “Conversations with Julian Dexter” off of The Grassy Knoll’s debut album. I was incredibly in love with cycling at the time and the bike was my second passion in life.

In the summer of 1999 Lance Armstrong won his first of seven Tour de France competitions. For me, July became the new Christmas. The drama and the skill level of the event was thrilling to watch. Cycling shops in Austin were set up with big screens and refreshments. The city felt so alive and so united. It is truly hard to put into words… I read his books and followed his accomplishments and was amazed by his strength, determination and Texas spirit. Plus, any fellow Austinite with a love of Shiner Bock beer and Chuy’s mexican food is cool in my book. This piece is not only for Lance but for all of us who love the sport of cycling.
