The Rough Trade Releases:

  • Magazine - Real Life (Rough Trade Exclusive, Ltd 500, Red and Black Marbled LP+)

Price: £27.99 Available From Rough Trade

Description

Real Life is the debut album by Magazine and a post punk benchmark. It was originally released in June 1978 by Virgin. The album includes the band's debut single "Shot by Both Sides", "The Light Pours Out Of Me" and the more orchestrated "Parade". Pressed from the 2000 remastered recordings, with a photo inner sleeve featuring an interview with Dave Formula.

Enduringly credible, Magazine have always been the connoisseur’s choice and frequently name checked by some of the most gifted musicians of recent years including Radiohead, Morrissey, Jarvis Cocker, U2, Johnny Marr and MGMT. NME.com went so far as to included Magazine in a poll as one of the most influential bands of all time. Magazine’s front man, Howard Devoto co-formed Buzzcocks with Pete Shelley after the pair had seen The Sex Pistols in early 1976 and promoted the now legendary Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall gigs. Devoto left in 1977, after the seminal ‘Spiral Scratch’ EP had been released, and created Magazine. Their first record was the post-punk anthem ‘Shot By Both Sides’. Leading the vanguard of post-punk, Magazine’s sound focused on the double barrels of Dave Formula’s swirling keyboards and John McGeoch’s ahead-of-its-time innovative guitar work, underpinned by Barry Adamson’s pulsing yet deviously irregular bass-lines. Atop of which came Howard Devoto’s lyrics. Aloof, articulate, tersely ironic and about as pliable as a garden rake. Too literary for the mass pop environment. Too poppy for the literary landscapes beyond it.

Doomed to exist in that tiny, undersubscribed hinterland where artful wordplay meets the crunching riff. Real Life, Secondhand Daylight, The Correct Use of Soap, and Magic, Murder and The Weather. Four ground breaking albums and then the band parted company, leaving behind an influential body of work to critical acclaim. A fifth studio album, No Thyself, was released in 2011 following a 2009 reformation. The plaudits continued.

  • Magazine - Secondhand Daylight (Rough Trade Exclusive, Ltd 500, Green and Black Marbled LP+)

Price: £27.99 Available From Rough Trade

Description

Secondhand Daylight is the second album by Magazine. It was originally released on 30 March 1979 by Virgin. Secondhand Daylight was somewhat of a departure from the debut, featuring more keyboards, smoother rhythms, outboard studio gadgetry and streamlined lyrics from Devoto. It's a compelling and cold post punk classic. Pressed from the 2000 remastered recordings, with a photo inner sleeve featuring an interview with Howard Devoto.

Enduringly credible, Magazine have always been the connoisseur’s choice and frequently name checked by some of the most gifted musicians of recent years including Radiohead, Morrissey, Jarvis Cocker, U2, Johnny Marr and MGMT. Magazine Posters and Ticket 1979

Two great Magazine Posters recently surfaced the first is a Belgian tour poster from 1979 which I offered the seller £250.00 for, but they politely declined, frustratingly it ended up sold on eBay for £217.00 annoyingly I forgot to go back near the end of the auction and it sold 10 minutes before I realised and logged in to check.

The 2nd is a cracking poster that Neil Braidwood has sent me a high res image of from Magazines UK tour back in 1979 at the Deb Hall at St Andrews University.

And then Ian Hall kindly posted up a copy of his ticket from the same tour but the Cambridge date.

Magazine, Manchester Apollo 23/4/1979

Huge thanks to Melanie Smith of Mud Kiss Photography for letting me share these two fantastic photos of Howard taken that Melanie took side of stage at Manchester Apollo 23rd of April 1979.  This was the gig Magazine had Simple Minds as support.

Melanie told me that her friend took unwell at the gig and got pulled onto the stage then waited for Melanie backstage.

When Melanie got there after the show Howard was with his manager and Sarah Brightman (Of Hot Gossip fame).

Melanie took the picture you can see below of Howard signing an autograph for an American pen pal who was a huge Magazine fan and Howard said laughing, something along the lines of 'Hope you haven't got my bald patch'.

It's rare to find photos of Magazine and Howard back then and I'm so grateful to Melanie for letting me share these.

Please respect Copyright on these photographs, which belongs to Melanie and Mud Kiss Photography.  No reproduction or copying of these pics is permitted without her express permission.

Pete Shelley RIP

Tonight I type this with tears in my eyes and sadness in my heart on the news that the great Peter Campbell McNeish more commonly known as Pete Shelley, lead singer and guitarist of our beloved Buzzcocks has sadly died earlier today of a heart attack in Estonia where he now lives.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Peter's Family his current band mates Steve Diggle, Danny Farrant, Chris Remington and all of his former bandmates, friends and fans worldwide.

I last spoke to Pete at an event in Manchester earlier this year, a wonderful man who will be sorely missed by us all.

Buzzcocks at The Electric Circus, 28 November 1976.

Not sure of the source for this pic and it might well be one of John Maher's from his scrapbooks that he's been posting via his @flyingmonkphoto Twitter account.  Incidentally if you love Buzzcocks (and if you don't why are you here?) then I would urge you to follow John's Tweets, they are a fantastic historical reference for Buzzcocks and related information.
